Demand in Japan
was sluggish in 2006 but the Japanese automotive industry was helped by strong
demand from overseas and managed to maintain Japanese production at 10 million
cars. The global auto industry can look forward to a new period of expansion,
as there are good signs of growth in the emerging markets of China and India as
well as Brazil and Russia, but it is faced with the important task of finding
ways to reduce CO2 emissions in order to tackle the problem of global warming.
The Japanese auto industry is expected to lead the global auto industry in meeting
the needs of the various countries and regions and contributing to the development
of a richer auto society and social economy through enhanced safety and environmental
measures.
The theme of this year's Tokyo International Automotive Conference
is 'Innovative Environmental Technologies and the Growing Emerging Markets'. If
the automotive industry is to maintain sustainable growth it is not sufficient
merely to ensure quality and cost, it is essential to contribute to the development
of international society by tackling the environmental and safety aspects. Executives
from global auto and parts manufacturers and specialists will participate in this
conference. There will be in-depth discussion on what is happening on the front
line, as companies compete with each other to develop environmentally friendly
cars. It will cover the many ways in which IT is being applied; including environmental
and safety technical innovations, design, and new safety and user-friendly features.
I am sure that we will all learn a great deal and trust that the conference will
contribute to the development of the auto industry both globally and here in Japan.

Innovative
Environmental Technologies and the Growing Emerging Markets
The automotive industry has consistently played a leading role in post-war Japan
as both a key industry for technology and employment, and a management model embracing
internationalization. Since it was launched in 1969, Nikkei Business, the flagship
magazine of Nikkei BP, has provided in-depth coverage, through features, news
and editorial, of the dynamic changes which have taken place as the auto industry
has evolved over time. It has become by far the largest business magazine in Japan
with a circulation of over 320,000.
Since 2001, in addition to reporting
on the industry in the magazine, we have held the Tokyo International Automotive
Conference, to coincide with the Tokyo Motor Show, to provide more in-depth information
and allow auto related specialists to discuss the future development of the industry.
At this, the fourth Tokyo International Automotive Conference, we are pleased
to present a full program with numerous speakers including top executives from
Japanese and overseas auto makers and parts manufacturers and auto specialists.
We would like to thank the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the Ministry
of Economy, Trade and Industry and Nihon Keizai Shimbun for their cooperation
as in previous conferences. We sincerely hope that this event will be a valuable
experience for you all and wholeheartedly wish for your further business development.
